Castro Valley Firecracker Tournament
The Alameda Blaze 12U tournament team dropped all four of their games in the Castro Valley Firecracker Tournament on June 30 and July 1.
In their opening game of seeding play on Saturday, the Livermore Smoke jumped to a 4-0 first inning lead over the Blaze, and that held up as the only scoring for the game. The Blaze threatened with base runners in every inning despite managing only one hit, a Kayla Simonson single, but they couldnt get the clutch hits needed to get on the board and cut into the Smoke lead. The Blaze defense was solid the entire game, and Mia Musso and Gia Morten were superb in relief, hurling three shutout innings.
In the second seeding game, the Blaze fell to the Castro Valley Synergy 8-0. Again they only managed one hit, a Michelle Popelka single. Erika Boekling had a fielding gem for the Blaze, snagging a hard line drive at 3rd base and doubling the runner off first.
In the final seeding game, the Blaze faced off against the Half Moon Bay Waves and dropped an 8-1 decision. The Blaze scored their only run of the day when Kelly Hosokawa collected her second hit of the game, and was driven home by Drew Jones on her second hit of the game. Michelle Popelka, Carrie Lee, and Erika Boekling also hit safely, as the Blaze bats finally started showing signs of life.
The Blaze put together their best game of the tournament in elimination play on Sunday against the top seeded San Ramon Valley Stompers. The Blaze doubled their scoring production from Saturday in the first inning, as Kelly Hosokawa led off with a walk, and Carrie Lee followed with a bunt single that turned into a bunt homer, as the catchers wild throw to first went past everyone, nearly all the way to the right field fence. They opened the lead to 4-2 in the fourth on another Lee single, and led 5-3 in the fifth after Erika Boekling was hit in the leg by a pitch, Jessica Ravetti singled, and Gia Morten slammed an RBI single to right center. However, the Stompers ended the weekend for the Blaze by coming up with 5 runs in the bottom half of the inning and sending the Blaze home with an 8-5 defeat.
